Welcome to SEO Beginners Guide 2017 Part 2 : Search Engines, In this Part: 2 we will take a look at the search engines, how will they function, how everyone uses them & what’re the ranking factors.

How Do Search Engines Work?

Search engines are made of 3 primary components:

  1. Crawling
  2. Indexing
  3. Finding the results

Crawling:

Spidering or Crawling means fetching the web pages totally for the information which is within the page ex: content, headings, keywords, images & links. Moreover, almost any data can be crawled by search engine spider. If crawlers find and hypertext links on web page pointing to a different web page then spider will even fetch that web page for updated information. This is how backlinks work.


After the web page is crawled, now the Indexing part comes into function. Think index have an extensive library of websites with data all the over the globe. It may take few time to get your web page indexed. Notice if you have updated any information on the internet page or the site the crawler and indexing take parts again and may consume some more time to display the updated content in search results.

Finding the results:

This part is vital for developers along with users. Once the visitor searched for a query, the search engine will dive into the indexed pages from its extensive library and matches to the query and shown them to the visitor. Every search engine company like Google, Yahoo, Microsoft and others have different algorithms which are secret and unknown to the regular people and webmasters. Even, there are many known and well-working ranking factors.

Ranking Factors


Many of these points are tried and tested; a few were speculations or still beliefs. On the peak of that, few are more essential than rest. Brian Dean from Backlinko created a fantastic set of Google position on ranking factors. The leading significant factor, the back-link profile is dependent on quantity and number of backlinks heading towards a website. It’s like an example of instructional reference. This is explained view on Google’s similarity of the site’s authority.

Most of these are only a limited of an essential ranking aspects (in unspecific order):

    • The frequency of changes
    • Site size and loading time
    • Intensity and relevancy of backlinks (inbound links to website)

    • Mobile phone optimization (AMP)
    • Domain age and authority
    • Social network back-links
    • Details, feedback, comments

    • Bounce percentage & click-through rate (CTR)
